Mukesh Ambani and James Murdoch win rights to show ‘Succession’ in India

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries and James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems have won the rights to broadcast the HBO series ‘Succession’ in India. The show, which explores the inner workings of a wealthy family and their media empire, has gained a massive following since its launch in 2018.

The acquisition is part of a broader push by Reliance to expand its digital offerings, including online retail and streaming services. The company has invested heavily in Jio, a mobile network and digital services provider that has become India’s largest telecom operator.

Lupa Systems, which was founded by James Murdoch after he resigned from the board of his family’s media company, News Corp, has also been expanding its footprint in India. The company has invested in a number of Indian media and tech firms, including audio streaming service Gaana and edtech startup Harappa Education.

The deal is expected to boost the profile of both Reliance and Lupa Systems in India’s rapidly growing media market, which has seen a surge in demand for streaming content during the Covid-19 pandemic. It also underscores the increasing importance of digital media in the country, where traditional broadcasters have struggled to adapt to changing consumer preferences.

The move is also likely to drive up competition between Indian streaming services, which are vying for a larger share of the market. While Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have gained significant traction in the country, home-grown platforms such as Hotstar and ZEE5 have also seen strong growth in recent years.

The acquisition of the rights to ‘Succession’ is expected to be a major draw for viewers in India, where there is a growing appetite for high-quality international content. The show has been widely acclaimed for its exploration of power, politics and family dynamics, and has won numerous awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama.

With India’s media market poised for further growth, the deal is likely to be a significant win for both Reliance and Lupa Systems, as they look to establish themselves as major players in the sector.
